Furniture Design

Overview:

"The aim of being a good designer is to have an influence. If you design furniture or lifestyle, you should influence theway people evolve globally. It's good to have an influence."

-Olivier Theyskens

The design and building of furniture is related to both architecture and interior design. Through the ages, the functional and decorative aspects of furniture have been influenced by economics and fashion. Furniture design has a rich precedent in terms of style and design and a close relationship with fashion, which makes practice in this area distinctly different from many product design areas.

Furniture designers explore solutions to meet marketing, manufacturing and financial requirements and to arrive at the optimum design of a furniture item. They consider both functional and aesthetic aspects and pay particular attention to ergonomics and factors relating to ease of use and human behavior. Furniture designers may work as part of a product development team: while other specialists such as mechanical engineers and upholsterers may work on mechanical logistics and fabric construction patterns, the furniture designer may be working on the overall structure of the product and its appearance.
